Regions and Counties

For administrative purposes, Scotland used to be divided up into counties and, within that, parishes. While counties have been replaced by a unitary system of local government, much of the information about clans, parishes, local studies and local family history libraries, archives, museums and heritage centres and family history societies is still organised by county.

Visit our helpful main Regions and Counties section to find our more about undertaking family history research within each of the ancient counties.
